About Raphael

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520), known simply as Raphael, was one of the most celebrated painters of the Italian Renaissance. Along with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he forms the trinity of great masters of that period.

Born in Urbino, Raphael showed extraordinary talent from a young age. He trained initially under his father, Giovanni Santi, and later with Pietro Perugino. His career flourished in Florence and then Rome, where he created some of his most iconic works under the patronage of Pope Julius II and Pope Leo X.

Raphael was known for his clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. He was also a prolific artist, running a large workshop and producing works in architecture, prints, and decoration, in addition to his paintings and frescoes.
